How It's Made

[Step 1]    Initially, this photo was printed without any diffusion. The test strip shown here was exposed at f5.6 for 30(@5) seconds. No filtration was used

Based on this test strip, the correct exposure was initially judged to be between 10 and 15 seconds.

[Step 2]    This second test strip was exposed at f5.6 for 15(@1) seconds. Based on the test, I decided that the appropriate equivalent exposure was f8 @30s with no filtration.

[Step 3]    Based on the first set of test strips, I decided to make a quarter page test strip of a larger area of the image. The exposure was made at f8 for 25 seconds. As it turns out, the overall exposure is a bit too light and I evaluated the image as too flat.

[Step 4]    After increasing the filtration to 3, this test strip was made at f4 for 20(@3) seconds. The image was evaluated as being too light, so another test strip was made (below).

[Step 5]    Another test strip was made at f4 for 26(@2) seconds. Based on this test strip, another small size test print was made (below).

[Step 6]    A second base print was made at a 3 filter, f4 at 23 seconds. At this point, I decided two things:

  1. The photo should be diffused to enhance the "creepiness" of the photo.
  2. The test print is a reasonable sample of the "correct" exposure for the print.

[Step 7]    This test strip was placed under dry mount tissue (DMT) with a piece of glass to diffuse the image. Based on past experience, I increased the exposure by more than 1 stop to f2.8 for 30(@5) seconds with a 3.5 filter.

[Step 8]    A third quarter sheet base print was made at f2.8 for 20 seconds. This exposure was deemed "correct" and a full-sized test print was made.

[Step 9]    The first full-sized test print was used to plan further dodging and burning.
